Why change? Path and choices.

October 10th, 2008

Marcelo,

I really like the butterfly.

Let me start from the end – you say you cannot be my spiritual teacher. Who can? Would I have to look at Geshe Kelsang Gyatso? When could you be my teacher?

Of course I understand that change needs to come from the inside. That is understandable. But it is not easy. Do you know what I mean?

So for every change we do on the inside, would we get a change on the outside. Energy – you know, we change our direction inside and the arrow points to the outside. Does that mean we then get a force opposing it on the outside? How does it work? How long would I need to practise?

Sorry if I ask too many questions. You said I am wrong by saying “we achieve what we set out to achieve”. I think your comparison with the flight ticket is lacking.

If I want to go to China, I will get there, even if I buy a ticket to South Africa. But, it takes me longer, more effort and more learning before I end up in China – e.g. I still get to China but the path is different.

It does not matter which choice we make in our material / western world. The end destination, and even if we are speaking of death, is certain. But whether we get where we are supposed to be, besides death, I think is certain too. The way we get there is not.

What do you think?

The path continues …

Marcelo,

Thanks for the post. I am thinking. Of course the challenges are and must be part of our path. We need the challenges to grow.

People say about me, that I am like a “Stehaufmaennchen“, German for a person that falls down and gets up again and again, called skipjack.
Isn’t that what is life and our path in life is all about. The ability to cope with stress, strain, challenges and things that come your way. Dive to the left, dive to the right and get on with it. Stand up straight for your values, beliefs, family etc.
I think that is what is important. The core inner belief that gives you the strength in moving about but always come back to a straight posture.
Would that make sense? Now the question is, what should we believe in?
If we say, “why did it happen to me”, would that not imply that we are thinking wrong. Should we not say “it happened to me, so it did not happen to other people who would have coped with it worse”?
Or, is the right question, the question about karma “why did it happen to me? It happened because I have done something in the past”?
Physics. Part of my book I want to write, and that chapter is finished, is about Newton’s law. All forces in a system are equal. Would that explain Karma? Would life be so easy to explain?
Marcelo, the circle of life is an interesting one. If we live a Buddhist way of life, and try to summarize that in 2 sentences, how can we actually care what we do? Sorry, don’t think it comes over clear enough, let me rephrase.
If, whatever we do, has the same effect on us and life, then it does not matter what we do, as long as it is within the Buddhist principles. Ergo, if I quit my job tomorrow, sell my house, leave my wife and go on a motorbike trip around the world, then I still will end up in old age where I would have ended up anyway? It can only be true for non material values.
Lets say I live until I am 80 and with the current life I might make it to an elderly home, a care home. The other life, going on a motor bike trip and living from what is available, still gets me to 80 but homeless.
However, that is the material view of things. My mind, is that what you are trying to say, is still the same. My spiritual “enlightenment” would not change. Is it that easy?
And, are you my spiritual teacher?
Love and kindness to you,
Volker

energy levels….recharging batteries

June 25th, 2008

Hello Marcelo,

It is so good to hear from you. I have been quiet because I have been very busy with work, traveling and moving.

Currently I am running on the last set of batteries, e.g. I need some sleep, some comforting food/wine and a good thought of Buddhism, e.g. some meditation. I sometimes feel that life takes over and gives us this feeling of being stressed and overwhelmed which then results in us feeling drained and running low on energy.

Can we stop that? Can we keep life at bay?

With love from London,
Volker
