Meditation – relying upon mental stabilization

October 25th, 2008

What do we really want for our lifes?
We want a family, a lovely partner, friendships, good job, enough money for all position or gods we desire, good house, reputation, respect from “ALL” others, happiness, peace, time for living and to enjoying our possessions.
Unfortunately, our infinite desires to get in life brings us only discontentment and unhappiness.
We need to find our balance within us.
Shantideva gives us a Path to achieve a mental stabilization. We just need to get a try.
“…I, who am decaying moment by moment, have attached to others
Who are also decaying moment by moment.
As a result of this, I shall not be able to see
Pure, attractive objects for thousands of lifetimes.
If I do not see someone whom I find attractive,
I become unhappy and cannot place my mind in concentration;
Yet, when I do see that person, I find no satisfaction
But am just as tormented by attachment as I was before.
Having strong attachment to other living beings
Obstructs the correct view of emptiness,
Prevents renunciation for samsara,
And causes great sorrow at the time of death.”
Have a thought about this beautiful words and get a time for yourself meditating on your attachments and what could they give to you?
Remember in certain way, we need to have friends and things in life, but we do not need to be attached to them. Not in the way that their absence or lack of having them could cause us a lot of sufferings.

Sunday thoughts

October 19th, 2008

Marcelo,

First of all thank you for posting so much input. It is inspiring to see your energy and thoughts, help and advise on the Buddhism and Life. Thank you so much for it.
However, I hate to admit it, it comes at a time where it is almost too much for me to digest. I would love to put time on hold now and sit down, re-read all your entries, a couple of books and get into a routine of meditating before I continue with time. A time hole I need, if that makes sense.
I know that is not possible. What we need to do is take one step at a time. I need to revisit every entry, every book, every comment and meditate every day. 5 or 10 minutes, 7 or 12, but I need to do it.
Isn’t that the same with anything in life. If we take baby steps, it will continue to grow into a routine and we will eventually reach our goal. I have written about that a couple of times in my coaching section of my other blog. The worst thing I find is that if you know an answer but you either do not have the time to proceed or you don’t have the stamina to proceed. Or is it both?
I assume it comes back to Karma. Really liked your entry about it. Because, we can only harvest what we sow! Ergo sum. There is not, “we achieve half of what we sow” or “we achieve double of what we sow”. It is as it is. Amen. Your meditation entry is wonderful too, giving guidance. Reason me linking to them is to structure my thoughts of what you wrote.
Marcelo, you are right, we need to structure this blog a bit more. Maybe we need to move some of the entries, e.g. about meditation or about Karma as a summary on our website? Also some section about Buddhist text and teaching? We could write essays about it and publish them on publications, similar to what I do on my website?
I now need to set myself some goals. Finding time and persistence as well as stamina and routine for meditation. Secondly, I need to find a spiritual teacher.
I keep you posted on my progress.
Tust you are well, have a great Sunday.
Love and Kindness from London,
Volker

New Beginning

August 5th, 2008

Hello Marcelo,

I trust you are well. Yesterday night I came back from my week break in the sun. It was good to be away and recharge the batteries. The weather was great, the people, everything.

Now, I am back to “square one”, I need to re-think life and think about what I would like to change, like in a new beginning.

It is not that I was unhappy before I went away or that I do not like my life, just the opposite. But after a break, I always believe it is time to change. Like after Christmas / New Year everyone wants to go to the gym. Or, after a hard-partying weekend, people always seem to stop drinking for a while.

So, after a break, with newly charged batteries, I need to think what I need to do? What do you / Buddhism suggests?

Love and Kindness from a rather cloudy London,
Volker

That sounds like a well deserved break. And, it reads like a new healing process for you. I wish you all the best for that.

My thoughts are with you. Once you have some spare time for some spare thoughts, be in touch.

circle of life?

June 4th, 2008

Marcelo,

That is a good question. If I understand you right, you are looking for the answer why life is going up and down, up and down. And, even if we try, meditate or practise patience, it is an up and down.

You know I work in sales, sustainable sales I shall say! Working FOR the client and not trying to make a quick sell.
So the last couple of months it was quiet, little sales. The past 2 days it was crazy with one big big project coming in hopefully next week. Down and Up. Normal Sales, normal days, normal life for me.

When it is down I think about why things are down. Is the product bad, am I not selling right, what have I changed, what can I change….
When it is up I think I am invincible, what else can I sell, what else can I do….

Normal for me. I have done sales for years. And, although I know it is happening and that it goes up and down, I will never get used to it. I try, I try meditation, I try to be patient or content with what I have, but life is just like that.

I do not think there will be another answer. We should try not to be bothered by it…..be patient, try….but the end of the day, it is an up and down. Also, because many people are never happy with what they have or what they do NOT have.

Ever thought about that?

Have a great night,
Volker

domino effect for happiness

May 6th, 2008

Hello, good afternoon Marcelo,

It is good hearing from you. Yesterday was a bank holiday in the UK, therefore here is my reply:

You are saying that without a balance you cannot perform as well in your job or life. Is that about work life balance you think or about balance in general. Possibly there is a way to look at things and think: if balance is what we aim for, let is be “work life” or “effort achievement” within work – no matter what balance means for someone personally, as long as someone is content and “in balance” s/he will perform well in any situation.
To rephrase: if one is not in balance, one cannot perform (as well)?

Regarding happiness. Only a balanced mind can be happy and content, being happy with one’s surrounding, performing well and once I am happy, I become happier – is that a domino effect? How are you getting happier?

Do you remember the story you told me about happiness comes from within and that if your mind is happy, you can develop yourself from within? That is where my coaching approach comes from. We stabilise in happiness, contentment – we balance and then look on the inside to develop ourselves.

Love to you – I will look out for your response.
